Irregular Theology

The Gospel requires—faith. Only for those who believe is it the power of God unto salvation. It can therefore be neither directly communicated nor directly apprehended. Christ hath been appointed to be the Son of God—according to the Spirit ([Romans] i. 4). ‘Now, Spirit is the denial of direct immediacy. If Christ be very God, He must be unknown, for to be known directly is the characteristic mark of an idol’ (Kierkegaard).

— Karl Barth, Epistle to the Romans, i.1 16, (p. 38)
